Force Have Their Way with Detroit 84-0

WESTLAND, MI: The Chicago Force arrived for their season opening game against the Detroit Dark Angels hoping to start the season with an authoritative win and to see the beginnings of a dominant offense. By the end of the first quarter the Force held a commanding 28-0 lead and the offense was humming with quarterback Sami Grisafe at the helm.

When the final horn sounded the score was 84-0, the entire second half was played with a running clock, and the Chicago offense had scored on every possession. In an efficient performance, Grisafe threw for 278 yards and 7 touchdowns on 18 completions in just 22 passing attempts. The ground game was equally impressive with Australian running back Kristy Moran gaining 219 yards on just 9 carries while scoring 5 touchdowns in her debut with the Force. Another newcomer to the Force was Polish running back Aleksandra Lukasiewicz, who punished the Detroit defense in 10 carries for 92 yards as she bowled over multiple tacklers with each carry. For the game, the offense amassed 592 yards and scored every 3.67 plays.

Grisafe distributed her seven passing TD’s to five different receivers – three to Tamika Robinson and one each to Cassey Brick, Jeanette Gray, Emma Vanderheyden and Sheenita Bass. Both Robinson and Gray had over 100 yards receiving. Chicago’s new kicker Jules Harshbarger was 12 of 12 on extra point attempts and also booted 3 kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks with her mighty turbo toe.

The Chicago defense held the Detroit team to less than 100 yards of total offense including penalty yardage. The defense had a few early struggles specifically with pass coverage and contain issues, but they fought through it and secured the shut-out, one of the team’s stated goals. Leading tacklers were Kelsey Casey, Mary Choules, Emilie Belanger, Angel Smith, Kim Marks and Cat Converse. Smith led the league in sacks last season and got a great start this year by sacking the Detroit quarterback twice in the first quarter, Marks also had a sack.

Head Coach John Konecki was very happy with the team’s performance stating “We played well in all three phases of the game. With the return of Sami Grisafe It was fun to see the offense operate with a high rate of efficiency. The defense did an excellent job led by veterans Kim Marks and Angel Smith. Furthermore, the addition of Jules Harshbarger gave the Force a viable weapon in the kicking game. As with any victory the players and coaches are pleased but we will need to continue to focus on fundamentals to ensure we sustain success throughout the season.”

Chicago remains on the road through April with upcoming games at Indy on April 22nd and a huge game in DC against the defending league champion on April 29th. Chicago will have an extended home stand in May and June, with the home opener on May 6th vs Minnesota Vixen. Force home games will be played at Evanston Township High School with 6pm kickoffs.
